Working week

Logistics Representative

On the best days, the work load is organized in such a way that I have time to focus on personal projects and that I can analyze where I can offer customers additional service.

Less pleasant days occur during peak season when fewer truck drivers are available. This may cause stress, because you have little time to come up with a creative solution due to the high workload.

Firsthand experience

A customer wants to transport white, green, and red boxes containing various products from one of their largest locations in Germany. They want to transport the products next week on Wednesday at 11 A.M., but there is a chance that the product which will be transported in the green boxes will not be ready until the afternoon. The customer sends you three different orders for Wednesday. What to do?

Major locations are a challenge, because you need to take multiple factors into account. One of your main goals is to find solutions that result in cost savings for your customer. In this case, it is – theoretically speaking – possible to transport three different products in a truck (this is called ‘consolidation’).

First, you need to determine whether the three products fit into one truck. If this is the case, you can combine the orders and realize cost savings for your customer. As in this case, there is a chance that the product in the green boxes will not be ready on time, you should contact the customer and ask their permission to transport the products in the white and red boxes in one truck and the product in the green boxes in a different truck. Subsequently, you should inform the carrier of this situation.

Because the two trucks will not be fully utilized, you can adjust the price. Additionally, you can inquire whether there happen to be any other products that need to be transported to the same location, which can then be put in the same truck. This way, you can save costs after all. The keywords are ‘consolidation’ and ‘optimization.’ You need to switch gears quickly, but at the same time, you must keep communicating properly with the customer and the supplier.
