What is required?

Vacancy

As an HVAC Application Engineer/Product Manager at BlueHeart Energy, you are responsible for translating and applying the unique benefits and operation of thermoacoustic units in heat pumps compared to traditional compression heat pumps. You understand and are able to clarify the technical advantages and applications of this technology for space heating and DHW (domestic hot water) to customers. You will regularly discuss with OEMs (the customers: mainly large and medium-sized manufacturers) within the HVAC world about how the thermoacoustic units function within various home configurations. Here, you translate technical details into clear efficiency figures like (S)COP or SPF, which are important for these customers. Over time, you will also focus on clarifying this technology and its application in air conditioning systems and for industrial applications.

In this role, travel is a significant part of your job: you visit a customer within Europe about eight times a year, to whom you present the technology of BlueHeart Energy. You are also involved in evaluating the units in the field and in the lab, together with partners like TNO. Additionally, you translate customer wishes into design requirements for the Development team and steer applications in pilot projects in the field in terms of content. Further, you perform market analyses to ensure that BlueHeart Energy technology continues to meet customer needs. In short, you continuously work with both internal teams and external stakeholders to optimally align the technology with the market.

In your role, you are aware of the tension between collaboration and competition with heat pump manufacturers. Sometimes you work together on energy transition projects, while at other times you must promote the technology of BlueHeart Energy as a better alternative to their systems. This requires a quick and effective response in various situations. Your primary goal is to make clear that BlueHeart Energy's technology is a better option than traditional gas boilers to contribute to more sustainable energy solutions.

You are part of a growing Business Development team of four people, soon expanding to six. In this role, you work closely with Technical Sales Engineers and Key Account Managers / Development Managers to prepare customer meetings. Together with the team, you strive to increase the impact of BlueHeart Energy's product on the heat pump market.

If you have a good understanding of the heating and cooling market, enjoy presenting your knowledge to others, and find it challenging to be frequently asked ad hoc questions, then this is the job for you.

Working week

HVAC Application Engineer

On an enjoyable workday, you might involve explaining and demonstrating the benefits of the thermoacoustic unit to customers with your colleagues from the Business Development team in the lab. Then you prepare a pilot project with your team and refine the design specifications for the unit.

On a less enjoyable day, you receive feedback from a customer who doesn't understand the benefits of the thermoacoustic unit, so you must explain the (S)COP benefits differently. Also, colleagues might threaten to choose a non-standard component selection for the target market, while the customer does not want this.

Firsthand experience

In a meeting with a potential customer, you explained the benefits of the thermoacoustic unit for space heating, but now they also want to understand the difference for domestic hot water. What do you do?

You explain the difference for domestic hot water using figures you've gathered from the market. However, the customer has their own figures. Therefore, it's important to explain the background of the figures you use. This requires a deep understanding of technical aspects, such as the power of the heat pump and its efficiency, which are highly dependent on factors like temperature and water flow rates.

You must be able to understand and explain these complex relationships since high efficiency is not always achieved under everyday conditions. It's crucial to communicate at this level with customers and provide clarity in technical discussions to convince the customer of the benefits of BlueHeart Energy technology.

Thermoacoustics is a disruptive approach to generate heat and cold, with potential to revolutionize the whole industry. Over the past seven years, BHE has developed a thermoacoustic engine to power heat pumps in residential buildings. This so called 'Blue Heart' of a heat pump is sold to manufacturers. In the coming years, the 'Blue Heart' will have to be further developed and optimized. Besides this, we will set up our production facility, strengthen the relationships with our customers (Manufacturers of heat pumps) and set up pilot projects in houses and monitor these.
