Vacancy

As a Data Engineering Intern at Orbisk, you will have the opportunity to work on a data engineering project with real-world data. You will be responsible for researching a specific topic in data engineering and for experimenting with different solutions from literature and the industry. Amongst other things, you will implement Proof of Concepts (PoCs) and Minimum Viable Products (MVPs). You do this with the aim of solving a real-world problem in food waste reduction.

You will actively think about how you can improve Orbisk's product: a smart camera and scale that uses image recognition to register which food is thrown away, when, and in what quantity. It is possible to work with different types of data (e.g. images, time series, external data) and data and artificial intelligence related problems (e.g. interpretability, aggregation, analysis, classification, regression). You will build on previous research and also learn more about other topics related to data engineering, such as data analytics, machine learning and MLOps. While your main task is to research and experiment, you will also learn how the production systems at Orbisk work.

You are part of the Data & AI team, which currently consists of six full-time employees and six interns. You will be actively involved in the company by participating in team meetings and having one-on-one conversations with your colleagues. A senior member of your team will be your supervisor during your internship.

If you want to work with advanced technology that prevents food waste, and you are passionate about data and artificial intelligence, then this is the internship for you.

Working week

Data Engineering Intern

On an enjoyable day, you participate in various instructive meetings with the tech people of Orbisk. After that, you are able to focus on a specific task and use the context and discussions from the meetings to approach it in a new way.

On a less enjoyable day, you mainly work independently, for example by reading literature. Although this might be a bit uneventful, you will learn a lot from it.

Firsthand experience

During your internship, you will be researching a specific topic in data engineering. How do you proceed?

First of all, you will learn more about the specific challenge by talking with other engineers and reading about past projects and research at the company. After that, you start doing literature research and finding tools and methods that are often used and might be used to solve the challenge. The next step is that you experiment with PoCs and MVPs that you present in team meetings and discuss in one-on-one conversations with colleagues. You process the feedback you receive on your work to improve your thought-out solutions. When you have done this, you document and potentially productionize your research and results. Finally, you present you internship results and provide insights on how these can be extended and improved in the future.

Growth

You work in a fresh and creative start-up, where everyone wants to learn from each other. Everyone has their own specialization. In the coming years, the organization will also focus on international growth, which means that more and more new positions will become available.

Orbisk does this by offering a smart camera and scale that uses image recognition to register which food is thrown away, when, and in what quantity. The customer can view this data in the dashboard, which provides insight into food wastage and can be used to reduce it.
