Working week

Trainee Finance & Risk
Koen Slob

On good days, I learn a lot by being actively involved with co-workers in the department in which I carry out my assignment or by attending a meeting.

Less pleasant days occur when you spend a lot of time answering emails or having conversations, as a result of which you don’t really have time for your own tasks.

Firsthand experience

You are invited to give a small update on the background of new laws and regulations within banks during a meeting of Finance & Risk managers. During the discussion that follows, you feel that the laws are misinterpreted. What to do?

It is appreciated if you, as a Trainee, demonstrate a proactive attitude and dare to ask questions. Through questions and comments, you try to clarify your interpretation of the laws, but at the same time, you do not want to ask too many questions.

After the meeting, you cannot let it go, because your interpretation differed from that of the managers. You arrange a meeting with the department head, who was also present at the meeting and who is open to discussion. Trainees at de Volksbank get plenty of room to ask questions and to be actively involved in order to learn. The department head appreciates your refreshing view of the laws, and after the discussion, you also understand the managers’ interpretation of the laws better.

Growth

For your personal development, you will complete an external program with your peer trainees. During this program, personal development is central, and you will get to work with themes such as leadership, collaboration, and influencing. In addition, you will get a personal training budget that you can spend on substantive training courses or external events.
