Working week

Associate
Erik van de Burgt

On an enjoyable day I have a variety of tasks and get to know a new client. It is interesting to really understand how the processes work in a company and determine how to value something.

On a less enjoyable day I am very busy and am busy all day with test activities, like checking. I like that less.

Firsthand experience

You receive an assignment from a pension manager who has concluded four contracts. The manager has asked for help from the ‘treasury centre’ who have a combined contract with the bank. The AFM rejected the proposal. What do you do?

You receive an assignment letter from the manager and partner with the case clearly defined. You discuss the assignment with the team. It is very important to ask your manager and team members as many questions as possible for every project. The purpose of this is for you as an Associate to learn as much as possible.

The combined contract causes all pension funds to be significantly affected if one fund is in difficulty. Pension funds conclude long-term contracts to mitigate risks. These are therefore about forty-year-old financial instruments. Because the AFM have determined that the treasury centre may not serve as an intermediary, the pension fund has to conclude a contract with the bank. The combined contracts must be valued independently. It is up to your team to outline a proposal for the allocation to the four pension funds. You ask for all necessary information from the client and consult with other colleagues from other teams at PwC, for example, if a mathematical model is required.

Growth

Within PwC you create a personal learning development plan together with your manager. In addition, you have the opportunity to participate in internal and external training programmes, one of which being the Chartered Accountant programme. When you start working for PwC , you will be assigned a personal coach and together with your year group, you participate in internal training courses such as soft skills workshops and knowledge sharing meetings. You will follow professional training courses, both in the Netherlands and abroad.
