Vacancy

As an IT Infrastructure Engineer, you will work on the design and implementation of Vopak’s IT working environment. You will be involved in the automation (automation tooling and scripting) of tasks that are still mainly performed manually.

In collaboration with three co-workers, you will provide advice, answer questions from the terminals and headquarters, and develop new IT services. An example includes facilitating business issues through monitoring and server deployments. You will work in an Agile way and determine the goals in three-week blocks. The rest of the team consists of four co-workers who are engaged in operational activities, such as responding to IT incidents. You will serve as a backstop when errors are too complex to solve for the operational team.

Working week

IT Infrastructure Engineer
Fabian Spoorendonk

On nice days, we can perform subject-matter tasks, introduce new products, and implement improvements that make our working environment smarter.

Less pleasant days consist of many meetings and a lack of time to work on scheduled tasks because we have to respond to incidents that are difficult to solve.

Firsthand experience

A terminal wants to further digitalize its processes based on an application and requests the IT Infrastructure Engineer, among others, to build and improve the underlying infrastructure. How to go about it?

The goal is to translate this request into an IT solution. To this end, you first create a design for the technical platform on which the application will run. Once the budget has been requested, you continue to work this out. You collaborate with co-workers from your team and maintain contact with other teams within Vopak that are also involved in the implementation of this new service, such as application experts. If projects take longer than a few weeks, a project leader is also involved.

Together with application experts, you build the platform to solve the demand from the terminal. You ensure that the platform runs in a secure environment. As an IT Infrastructure Engineer, you build, implement, and improve the application if necessary.

Sometimes, the IT department needs to reject an incoming request – for example, when a supplier has come up with a technical solution that does not comply with Vopak’s norm and policy. In that case, it turns out that the proposed technical solution has no use in practice. As an IT Infrastructure Engineer, you have the knowledge to advise against such a proposal.

Growth

At Vopak, you can grow in multiple directions; we also look for opportunities beyond your current discipline. It depends on how you develop yourself as well as the opportunities available at that time. This could be a logical growth path.

Working at Vopak

At Vopak, we store vital products with care. Products for everyday life. The energy that allows people to cook, heat or cool their homes and for transportation. The chemicals that enable companies to manufacture millions of useful products. The edible oils to prepare food. We take pride in improving access to cleaner energy and feedstocks for a growing world population, ensuring safe, clean and efficient storage and handling of bulk liquid products and gases at strategic locations around the world. We are excited to help shape a sustainable future by developing infrastructure solutions for new vital products, focusing on zero- and low-carbon hydrogen, ammonia, CO2, long-duration energy storage and sustainable feedstocks. Although the demand for storage and logistics of sustainable energy products is changing, today we also meet the needs of today's society. At our terminals, where everything goes on 24/7, we store the vital products on which today's society is built.
