As a Commercial Trainee at ADM, you will develop a deep understanding of the trading market in two years. ADM is an American global food processing and commodities trading corporation. During these two years, you will work on different product lines. The first year is mainly dedicated to logistic positions. Your principal occupation consists of coordinating and arranging the shipments of the products or arrange plant logistics. You make sure there is an efficient flow of all the documents and products. This entails that you verify that all parties involved are informed about the current situation of the shipments and that they are provided with the correct documents. During your traineeship, you will also learn about contract law, logistics, contract execution, risk management and the financial implications of trading decisions.

In your second year you will work on a different ADM location in Europe. You will follow a learning plan which balances business requirements and personal development. You will be supported by a mentor from the Commercial Trading team. After the traineeship, you are prepared for a future Trader or Commercial Management role within the organization.

If you’re interested in the agribusiness and have an affinity with trading, then this is the job for you.

Commercial Trainee
Gregoire Dhellin

I have an enjoyable day when everybody sends me the right documents on time, so I can make sure a shipment goes smoothly.

I have a less enjoyable day when I have to update my Excel overview. I have to log every step in there and that takes up a lot of my time.

Firsthand experience

A vessel with your products has to go from Argentina to India. How do you handle this?

First, you nominate the loading intention to your supplier according to the contract conditions. Then select the broker, agent and surveyor in Argentina and provide them with all the necessary information of the loading. During this process, it is your responsibility that the correct documents are issued. When everything is ready, the ship leaves for India. During this journey, you make sure you send the documents to the banks of the buyers in India. When everything is approved they can authorize the payment for the products. When you have received the payment, you can order the discharge of the vessel. You select agents and when necessary surveyors. They make sure the discharge goes smoothly. During discharge, you keep in touch with all parties involved and assist to solve any possible problems (shortages, quality issues, delays). When all costs are paid and issues solved you close the shipment.

As a Trainee you get to know ADM and their tasks step by step. As a young professional you will directly be involved in the projects of their trading teams. Due to training on the job you have the chance to develop your skills and grow with challenging tasks. To give you the best support right from the start ADM invented a trainee mentoring program. You will be assigned to an experienced manager who will be your mentor and who will attend you as a consultant during your traineeship.
